What is a participation fund that complies with Islamic finance laws?

İlkay Öztürk, Director of Fund Management at Hedef Portfolio, made the following assessment regarding what an Islamic finance fund is:

“Participation funds, in fact, have emerged as a theme that has gained significant strength in Türkiye over the last 10-20 years, coinciding with the increasing prevalence of Islamic finance practices worldwide. With the growing demand for Islamic finance and participation finance, these funds, which do not offer interest, can be grouped under a general umbrella. Participation funds are divided into two groups: participation umbrella funds and participation funds under free funds. For example, free participation foreign currency funds can be classified as fund types that aim to offer investors a higher return than that of a foreign currency participation account. These low-risk funds are also divided into different types under participation umbrella funds. Participation gold funds invest in instruments such as physical gold and gold lease certificates and are in demand by investors because they comply with Islamic finance rules. Money market participation funds offer investors a fund structure that provides overnight returns and are a type of fund where entry and exit can be made at T0.” Participation equity funds, in accordance with Islamic finance principles, invest in the Istanbul Stock Exchange participation indices. Multi-asset participation funds aim to maximize returns for investors based on their risk profiles by investing in multiple asset classes. Participation funds can be summarized in this way.
