Great Place To Work: An Organic Chemistry Success Story

Asuman Yorulmaz, Organic Chemistry Head of People and Culture, and Stefano Kaslowski, Chairman of the Board of Directors; They talked about their process of becoming a Great Place To Work and being included in the list of Europe’s Best Employers.Yorulmaz and Kaslowski said:

Asuman Yorulmaz: Organik Kimya is a family company founded in 1924. We produce in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Türkiye. All the products we produce from these facilities meet our customers in more than 100 different countries.

What were the core values that played a critical role in the success of Organic Chemistry?

Stefano Kaslowski: Being determined, commitment, honesty, not giving up easily. In other words, when we have “trust”, which is the thing that comes to our mind the most at Great Place To Work, a small team, a company, and a country can reach very different places. That’s why we prioritize everything that can strengthen trust in our company.

Where does Great Place To Work, with which you collaborated to strengthen employee loyalty in the 100-year Organic Chemistry journey, stand in this story?

Asuman Yorulmaz: First of all, it is a completely impartial and independent company, doing business internationally and the opportunity to compare ourselves with many different employers both in Türkiye and abroad started us on our Great Place To Work journey. I think one of the greatest values it has brought to us during this whole journey is not assuming that but including employees in the processes and being a platform where their voices can be heard. Being able to do this through an independent company like Great Place To Work has really empowered us. As we listened, we learned how easy it could actually be to find a solution. As we strengthened that communication, the scores we received changed and we have been on the list of Türkiye’s best employers for the last 8 years. I share this with great pride. Because the culture we have created here and the influence and support of all our employees on this culture contribute greatly. Everyone uses this as an independent feedback tool, and I think knowing that everything said here will be heard gives our employees confidence. That’s why I say I’m glad we started this journey together 11 years ago.

What kind of contributions does your Great Place To Work collaboration provide to your company?

Asuman Yorulmaz: We work in a structure where there is mutual communication and I know the causes and consequences. We share everything. All financials of the company are open to all our employees. We hold open communication meetings. We aim to return to a role-based, more development-oriented structure where we can grow as we learn. We took the first steps towards this. In fact, taking part in the Great Place To Work process gives us courage in this regard. Because being a bit of a pioneer, being a leader, being able to accept different perspectives here and having an environment where these can be done supports this process a lot.

You have been included in the list of Europe’s Best Employers; How did your collaboration with Great Place To Work contribute to this success?

Asuman Yorulmaz: We were included in the European list for the first time this year. This is really valuable for us. Because 30% of our employees actually have different identities. Having a workable environment for everyone and being able to represent not only in Türkiye but also to be accepted in Europe gives us strength. That’s why not giving up for 8 years and being able to enter such a list in Europe at the end of 8 years makes us even more excited for the next step. The most important thing we desire is to be the best employer in Türkiye in the category we are in.

Stefano Kaslowski: We are very excited and very happy. Our Great Place To Work journey has been going on for many years. It became a binding factor that was widely accepted within the company, a source of pride. It is also important to be among the best employers in Europe this year. Because we turned 100 last year. We focused our growth strategy on Europe. We commissioned our Netherlands facility 20 years ago and we are now a very serious and important player in Europe. Examining the “data” provided by Great Place To Work, examining what other companies have done, and better understanding the expectations of new generations today has helped us to constantly raise the bar. It’s really hard to understand what you “set” that bar for. That’s why Great Place To Work became a partner and a guide for us here.
