Opinnate Co-founder Anıl Cecikoğlu outlined the most pressing needs in network security management.
Cecikoğlu stated:
The primary need in network security management is, in fact, visibility. We need to increase visibility. Perhaps we also need to step up our auditing efforts. By visibility, we mean reviewing and analyzing the relevant rules. I believe it is essential to analyze these rules yourself and thoroughly prepare before audits take place; this way, you can remediate any vulnerabilities—effectively closing them—before the audit even begins.
The Importance of Visibility in Network Security Management
Network security has become a top priority for businesses in today’s increasingly digital world. Protecting corporate data, building system resilience against external threats, and ensuring user security are the cornerstones of successful network management. In this context, visibility within network security management is not merely a supporting element but a strategic necessity that directly impacts the system’s sustainability. By ensuring that all activities within the network environment can be monitored, visibility enables the early detection of security vulnerabilities and facilitates rapid response.
Visibility in network security refers to the ability of system administrators to monitor network traffic, access requests, user activities, and firewall traversals in real-time. This level of visibility allows for the real-time identification of system vulnerabilities and the analysis of suspicious activities, enabling necessary actions to be taken without delay. In a network infrastructure with poor visibility, malware or unauthorized access attempts may go undetected for extended periods, potentially leading to data loss and damage to the organization’s reputation.
Logging systems are among the most effective methods for enhancing network visibility. Recording all network operations not only enables retrospective analysis but also provides critical data for real-time threat detection. SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) tools, in particular, transform raw logs into meaningful information, making it possible to classify and prioritize threats. This empowers security teams to move beyond merely reacting to incidents and instead implement proactive protection strategies. Another crucial method for ensuring visibility is the continuous review of network security rules. The integration of new devices into the network, application updates, or policy changes can give rise to new security vulnerabilities over time. Therefore, firewall configurations, access control lists (ACLs), and segmentation strategies must be regularly audited and updated, ensuring the network infrastructure remains prepared against the latest threats.
Monitoring user behavior is also a vital component of network visibility. Activities such as data transfers occurring at unusual hours, access requests from unknown locations, or atypical session durations can serve as early indicators of a potential breach. Advanced analytics systems, as well as AI-powered behavioral analysis tools, can be employed to detect such behaviors.
The role of audits in these processes cannot be overstated. Audits provide an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of network security policies and technical measures. Furthermore, independent audits conducted by external parties enable the detection of vulnerabilities that might otherwise go unnoticed by internal teams. Preparatory steps—such as open port scans, configuration checks, and access analyses—streamline the audit process and help prevent potential disruptions.
Increasing visibility in network security management directly impacts not only system security but also the organization’s operational continuity and digital reputation. A transparent, traceable, and measurable network infrastructure allows threats to be detected and neutralized before they escalate. This creates a significant competitive advantage, particularly in critical sectors such as finance, healthcare, and e-commerce. Visibility in network security management can be achieved through logging, monitoring, rule updates, user behavior analysis, and regular audits. The integration of these elements enables the construction of a robust and sustainable security framework. Investing in visibility is no longer merely an option but a necessity for securing the digital future of businesses.
