How do companies define security and ethical boundaries when entrusting their data to artificial intelligence?

Çağda Çelikbilek, IBM Türkiye’s Country Leader for Software, spoke about the security and ethical boundaries when companies entrust their data to artificial intelligence. Çelikbilek stated the following:

Generative AI, in particular, refers to systems that can now independently generate value and make their own decisions regarding the output they produce in response to our input. Therefore, the transparency, comprehensibility, explainability, and ethics of AI have become critically important. This is actually one of the main issues subject to regulation, which governments worldwide are trying to address. At IBM, we believe that generative AI, or AI in general, must exist in three main areas: It must be transparent, able to explain to us which data it uses. Since we are trying to place it alongside humans, not in their place, institutions need to be transparent in this regard. It’s essentially a matter of trust. We are not entrusting our data; we are entrusting the institution’s culture and reputation in this area. Therefore, transparency is crucial. Reliability and security are also critical. Where is the efficiency? As an institution, we need to constantly know and be able to explain this. And finally, there’s the ethical aspect. On the ethical side, it’s crucial that artificial intelligence operates within a certain “guardrail,” let’s say, a framework of rules and regulations. IBM, in fact, has been involved in this area from the beginning as a member of the European Union’s “EUAI Act,” and we’ve already offered the “Watsonx Governance” platform alongside the “Watsonx” generative AI platform since its launch. The governance, transparency, explainability, and ethical compliance of AI have been integrated into our platform from the outset. This isn’t unique to organizations working with IBM on AI; organizations using any AI platform can also ensure the governance of generative AI with the “Watsonx Governance” platform.

Transparency and Understandability of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly developing and are present in many areas of our lives today. However, transparency and understandability are crucial for the effective and reliable use of these technologies. Knowing what data artificial intelligence uses and how it produces results with this data is a critical source of information for users and organizations.

Compliance with Ethical Guidelines in Artificial Intelligence

Developing and using artificial intelligence systems in accordance with ethical guidelines increases public trust in these technologies. Ethical guidelines ensure that artificial intelligence is respectful of human rights, fair, and impartial. Therefore, the compliance of artificial intelligence applications with ethical standards should be continuously monitored.

IBM and Artificial Intelligence Governance

IBM plays a leading role in the development and implementation of artificial intelligence technologies. The company has developed various platforms to ensure that artificial intelligence is transparent, understandable, and compliant with ethical guidelines. IBM’s “Watson” and “Watsonx Governance” platforms offer important tools in this area.

The Importance of Regulations

Regulations over artificial intelligence technologies ensure their safe and ethical use. Regulations such as the European Union’s “EUAI Act” guarantee that AI applications comply with standards. Such regulations increase user and organizational trust in AI.

The Impact of AI on Organizational Culture

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform organizational processes and cultures. However, for this transformation to be successful, AI must be integrated transparently and reliably. Organizations must adapt AI applications to suit their own culture.

Watsonx Governance Platform

The Watsonx Governance platform is designed to provide governance for AI applications. This platform ensures that AI is used transparently, understandably, and in accordance with ethical guidelines. Organizations working with any AI platform can effectively manage productive AI governance with “Watsonx Governance”.

Conclusion

Transparency, comprehensibility, and adherence to ethical guidelines are crucial for the effective and reliable use of artificial intelligence technologies. IBM enhances the reliability of AI and builds user trust in these technologies through the platforms it develops in this field. Regulations and ethical standards ensure that AI develops and is used in accordance with societal expectations. Therefore, continuous monitoring and improvement of AI applications are necessary.
