Protection Against Data Breaches and Cyber Threats

In an exclusive interview with Wise TV, Özgür Peltek, Business Development Manager at Komtera Teknoloji, discussed the complex attacks currently threatening the cyber world and the measures that need to be taken against them.

The cyber world is becoming increasingly complex. Threats such as “man-in-the-middle” attacks—where an adversary intercepts communications within an existing network—network eavesdropping, phishing campaigns, and ransomware have become part of our daily lives. Even more concerning, however, is the fact that these attacks are now carried out in a highly professionalized manner. For instance, thanks to the “Ransomware as a Service” (RaaS) model, individuals with no technical expertise can orchestrate such cyberattacks using code purchased directly from the dark web. To examine this further, one can look at attacks launched by RaaS groups like REvil, LockBit, and BlackCat, which specifically target sensitive sectors such as finance, aviation, and healthcare. These groups carry out severe attacks in these areas, inevitably causing significant damage. Without solutions for data backup and encryption, we remain completely vulnerable to the devastating impact of these cyber threats.

The Rise of Cyber Threats

The cyber world has become increasingly complex and dangerous alongside rapid technological advancements. This complexity has led to a diversification and professionalization of cyber threats. Today, cyberattacks target not only individuals but also large institutions and nation-states.

Man-in-the-Middle Attacks

Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks are carried out by cyber attackers who secretly eavesdrop on or alter communication between two parties. Such attacks are particularly common on unsecured networks and are used to steal users’ personal information.

Identity Theft and Phishing Attacks

Phishing is a type of attack that aims to obtain personal information by deceiving users through fake emails or websites. Phishing attacks often trick users by appearing to originate from trusted sources, such as banks or popular web services.

Ransomware and RaaS

Ransomware is malicious software that blocks access to users’ files by encrypting them and refuses to release the files until a ransom is paid. The Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) model enables even individuals without technical expertise to carry out such attacks.

The Dark Web and Cybercrime

The dark web is a platform where cybercriminals can operate anonymously. Here, ransomware and other forms of malware can be easily purchased and distributed. This situation contributes to the further proliferation of cyber threats. Targeting Sensitive Sectors

Sensitive sectors such as finance, aviation, and healthcare are primary targets for cyberattacks. Attacks in these sectors can lead not only to financial losses but also to consequences that endanger human lives.

Data Security and Protection Methods

The most effective way to guard against cyber threats is to back up data regularly and employ robust encryption methods. Additionally, raising user awareness regarding cybersecurity and utilizing secure networks are crucial measures.

Summary

In today’s world, cyber threats have become increasingly sophisticated and dangerous. Threats such as man-in-the-middle attacks, phishing, ransomware, and RaaS significantly impact both individuals and organizations. Sensitive sectors, in particular, can be vulnerable to such attacks. Therefore, prioritizing data security and protection methods is critical to minimizing the devastating effects of cyber threats.
