İbrahim Aslanbakan, CISO of Medipol Group, emphasizes the importance of critical services within the automotive sector—specifically the defense industry, iron and steel production facilities, and the supply chain—from a cybersecurity perspective. Drawing attention to the rising threat of cyber warfare in our region, he notes that critical systems such as electrical infrastructure are being targeted and discusses the economic impact of state-sponsored attacks.
Critical services are the most significant issue in the automotive sector. These include the defense industry, iron and steel production facilities, and the Tier-1 supply chain—namely, the manufacturing plants themselves. Production automation systems within these factories and institutions in the iron and steel sector are also crucial. Cyber warfare—a relatively new concept—has now entered our agenda. Events in our region and around the world have demonstrated that targets include critical infrastructure, particularly electrical grids. It is not merely mafia-like groups but also nation-states that target these structures, inflicting direct damage on economies. I view this as the greatest risk for the 2024–2025 period. Last year, an attack on a pipeline in the United States forced a ten-day halt in oil shipments; Windows-based systems were encrypted, and oil prices surged significantly. During the war in Ukraine, attacks on power plants led to city-wide blackouts. As Turkey, we must implement security measures for critical services and infrastructure—backed by international certifications—and ensure we have the necessary human resources to execute them effectively.
The Importance of Critical Services
Critical services form the cornerstones of a country’s economic and social structure. Sectors such as the defense industry, iron and steel production facilities, and supply chains are at the forefront of these services. These sectors are vital for the nation’s development and security.
Cyber Warfare and Threats
In recent years, the concept of cyber warfare has gained increasing importance. Critical systems, such as electrical infrastructure, have become targets of cyberattacks. Such attacks not only cause economic damage but also threaten social order.
The Role and Responsibilities of States
States are obliged to take the necessary measures to protect critical infrastructure. This is essential not only for national security but also for economic stability. States must be prepared for such attacks and implement the necessary safeguards.
Past Incidents
Past incidents have demonstrated the serious consequences that cyberattacks can entail. For instance, an attack on a pipeline in the United States caused a halt in oil shipments and a rise in prices. Similarly, attacks on power plants in Ukraine left cities without electricity.
Measures Türkiye Should Take
Turkey must be prepared for threats targeting critical services. Security measures backed by international certifications play a crucial role in this area. Implementing these measures with adequate human resources is essential for the country’s security. The Importance of International Cooperation
International cooperation plays a significant role in combating cyber threats. By sharing information and expertise, countries can establish more effective defense mechanisms. Such cooperation is crucial for minimizing the impact of cyberattacks.
Conclusion
Protecting critical services is vital for a country’s security and economic stability. Cyberattacks represent one of the greatest risks to these services. Turkey must implement security measures that meet international standards to counter these threats and ensure sufficient human resources to execute them. International cooperation plays a key role in this process and serves as an effective tool in the fight against cyber threats.
