What risks come to the fore as attack surfaces expand?
Emirhan Aşçı, Sales Manager at Trend Micro, appeared as a guest on Wise TV to discuss the rapidly evolving nature of today’s cyber threats.
“While the types of attacks seen globally are becoming increasingly diverse, today’s IT (Information Technology) systems, operational structures, and even individual identities are all being exploited as vectors for cyberattacks. While organizations may have strong control over their IT infrastructure, vulnerabilities often emerge when that same level of oversight is lacking within their operational structures. Driven by both shifts in human resources and the rise of these sophisticated attack methods, the scale and severity of cyber threats continue to grow day by day. For instance, the use of ‘deepfake’ technology—impersonating an individual by convincingly mimicking their appearance—is now one of the many types of attacks we face.”
New Threats in Cybersecurity
In today’s landscape, cybersecurity threats have become increasingly complex and varied, keeping pace with the rapid advancement of technology. It is no longer just computer systems that are at risk; personal identities and operational structures have also become primary targets for attacks. This reality necessitates the development of new strategies and solutions within the field of cybersecurity. Technologies such as deepfakes, in particular, are amplifying both the scale and the impact of these attacks.
The Role of IT Systems
IT (Information Technology) systems play a critical role in managing computing infrastructure. However, if these systems fail to establish full oversight over operational structures, security vulnerabilities can arise. Consequently, it is essential that IT systems are continuously updated and that security protocols are strictly enforced.
Vulnerabilities in Operational Structures
Operational structures can remain exposed and vulnerable to cyberattacks. This situation becomes even more pronounced with the shifting landscape of personnel resources and the emergence of new types of attacks. Strengthening operational structures should be a key component of any cybersecurity strategy.
Identity Theft and the Protection of Personal Data
Personal identities are among the most common targets of cyberattacks. Identity theft involves the theft and misuse of an individual’s personal information. Such attacks can have serious consequences for both individuals and organizations. The protection of personal data must remain at the core of cybersecurity strategies.
Deepfake Technology and Its Threats
Deepfake technology enables the creation of fabricated content by mimicking people’s faces and voices. This technology can be leveraged, particularly in social engineering attacks, and poses significant security threats. It is essential to develop effective defense mechanisms against deepfake technology.
