I have been working as the Cybersecurity Director at Turkcell for approximately 6 years. Together with our team, we ensure the security of Turkcell’s mobile operator and other digital services. In addition, we provide value-added cybersecurity services to both corporate and individual customers, such as DDoS blocking, 24/7 SOC monitoring, and cyber threat intelligence.
Why OctoXLabs?
As the Cybersecurity Directorate, we work very closely with the domestic ecosystem. We currently use more than 25 domestic cybersecurity products. We also closely follow the activities in the cybersecurity cluster. Three years ago, we started looking for technology in a very trending area like Cyber Asset Attack Surface Management. This is how our paths crossed with OctoXLabs. The company explained its products in detail. After realizing that it was a product we truly needed, we invested in this area. What made OctoXLabs different? First of all, when I spoke with my colleagues who operate this system, they mentioned that OctoXLabs has a very user-friendly interface. They said they had no difficulty performing the operation and were able to use the software very effectively, which excited and pleased us, especially seeing this feature in a domestic product. It has now become one of our most indispensable products at Turkcell.
What gains have been achieved with OctoXLabs?
Of course, to collect data from many different server layers, as well as various security equipment, devices, and software, your connector infrastructure needs to be very advanced. OctoXLabs provides dozens of different connectors. With these connectors, we can pull data from both Turkcell’s internal systems and many software and hardware applications used globally. The inventory here can be built in a very mature way. So, today, when a vulnerability emerges, we can easily find out which system or server has this vulnerability through OctoXLabs without much effort. This is really valuable in terms of increasing the visibility of the inventory. Managing cybersecurity proactively is very important. OctoXLabs also provides an action center feature. We can define rules here. For example, if one of my servers is managed outside the domain, if it doesn’t have a domain, I can generate an alarm about it. I can give an example. Or, if one of our security agents – it could be an antivirus, an XDR agent, an EDR agent – is deactivated, we can instantly generate an alarm about it, be informed, and take action in our SOC center. Therefore, to summarize, OctoXLabs, thanks to the inventory visibility it provides, enables us to manage patches and vulnerabilities in a much more mature way.
What are the advantages of working with a local company like OctoXLabs?
We work with over 25 local companies. OctoXLabs is one of the most successful. We speak the same language. This means that our colleagues can discuss any complex problems with a local company, not a foreign one, without any language barrier. We don’t experience any difficulties in this regard. This is especially beneficial when compared to global products. In an environment like Turkcell, they need new features or the ability to quickly fix bugs. Sometimes, explaining our needs to foreign products can take a long time and be arduous. We can even have real difficulties getting certain features implemented.
