How Are Procurement Strategies Shaping the Future of Technology?

Hüseyin Pekşen, IBM Turkey’s Software Leader, spoke about how IBM’s acquisition strategies are shaping the future of technology. Pekşen said the following:

Starting in 2019, IBM made several major acquisitions. These acquisitions began with “Red Hat.” With “Red Hat,” we essentially positioned “OpenShift” as the backbone of our software. Subsequently, with “Turbonomic,” we’ve addressed the challenges of hardware procurement—a major issue today. In fact, through optimization, particularly “GPU” optimization, we’ve resolved many hardware-related issues. In addition, IBM implemented a strategy to track real-time data flows through its acquisitions of “Turbonomic,” “HashiCorp,” “Web Methods” from “Software AG,” and, most recently, “Confluent.” At the core of these acquisitions lies the goal of building the right ecosystem. I can explain this as follows. IBM is actually a very large organization, but it cannot do everything on its own. It achieved this by acquiring companies that excel in their respective fields. As a very large organization, IBM completed the acquisitions of companies it deemed important in order to move forward quickly. In particular, rather than relying on the “I’ll do everything myself” approach, IBM continued on its path by acquiring very strong players within its ecosystem. “Confluent” is the most prominent example of this recent acquisition. As a result, IBM has gained a strong capability in the real-time monitoring of data streams.
