What are the differences between EDR and XDR?

Emre Aktaş, Business Development Manager at Komtera Teknoloji, explained the difference between EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) and XDR (Extended Detection and Response)—two of the most intriguing topics in the cybersecurity world—on Wise TV.

He noted that EDR is a solution that collects and analyzes data from endpoints to provide protection based on that analysis. He emphasized that XDR, on the other hand, is not limited to endpoints alone but offers broader protection by evaluating data from various sources.

What is EDR?

EDR stands for “Endpoint Detection and Response” and is a cybersecurity solution developed to ensure endpoint security. EDR systems continuously monitor and analyze data from computers, servers, and other endpoints. These systems are designed to detect, analyze, and respond to threats. EDR is particularly effective at detecting local threats and responding to them quickly.

EDR solutions detect anomalous activities on endpoint devices, identify the source of these activities, and eliminate potential threats. These systems are typically equipped with automated response mechanisms, enabling rapid intervention against threats. EDR provides a proactive defense against cyberattacks and helps organizations minimize security vulnerabilities.

What is XDR?

XDR stands for “Extended Detection and Response” and is a cybersecurity solution that offers a broader security perspective. XDR analyzes data not only from endpoints but also from email systems, network traffic, servers, and other sources. In this way, XDR offers a more comprehensive threat detection and response mechanism. By integrating various security solutions, XDR creates a broader security network, enabling more effective threat detection.

XDR solutions aggregate data from diverse sources into a repository known as a “data lake” and analyze this data meaningfully. These analyses are augmented by data from the global user base, thereby ensuring more comprehensive security. XDR establishes a wider line of defense against cybersecurity threats and helps organizations strengthen their security strategies.

What Are the Differences Between EDR and XDR?

EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) is a protection system based on analysis of data collected from endpoints. As the name implies, EDR systems detect and respond to threats by analyzing data from computers, servers, and other endpoints. Designed specifically to enhance endpoint security, this system is generally effective at detecting local threats.

XDR (Extended Detection and Response), on the other hand, provides broader protection by evaluating data from various sources—not just endpoints. XDR aggregates data from diverse sources such as email protection systems, firewalls, server protections, access points, and switches. This data is collected in a “data lake,” where it is grouped and analyzed meaningfully. Consequently, XDR offers more comprehensive security than EDR and benefits from data gathered across its entire global user base.
