Are small businesses in Türkiye vulnerable to cyberattacks?

Komtera official Serdar Aydemir assessed the state of cybersecurity in small businesses in Turkey under the title, “Are Small Businesses in Türkiye Unprotected Against Cyber ​​Attacks?”

Aydemir stated the following:

A manufacturing company with 30 locations in Türkiye was subjected to a cyber attack due to an open port. After analyzing all the files on the server for approximately 20-25 days, the attackers encrypted them and demanded a ransom. Initially, the company tried to restore from backups, but they couldn’t access data prior to six months and had to re-enter all the data from that period. The blame for this situation fell on the IT department. The company owner stated that they faced questions such as, “These hackers never found us before. How did they find us? Do you have any collaboration with these hackers?” This incident highlights the critical role of IT specialists working in SMEs and large-scale companies. However, in Türkiye, the IT side is not sufficiently valued; they are expected to maintain the company’s technological products for low salaries. However, the most critical employee in a company is the IT specialist.
