Is Maintaining Customer Trust a Technical Necessity or a Corporate Culture?

Uğur Tekin, Information Risk Management Manager at ING Turkey, discussed whether maintaining customer trust is a technical necessity or a matter of corporate culture. Tekin stated the following:

It is part of corporate culture. Trust is a fundamental concept in the banking sector; the entire architecture and structure are built upon this “trust factor.” When customers engage with systems and processes they trust, one of the things they value is not having to constantly feel that security presence. There is no need for us to explicitly declare, “We are protecting you securely” or “We are providing services securely.” In fact, we can make this aspect invisible. This leads us to the “back-end” or the operational core of the process—bringing us to the technical components that underpin trust. While it may appear to be a technical concept, the crucial process supporting these technical elements is ensuring that trust is not merely the responsibility of the front-line staff interacting with the customer; rather, the entire organization must internalize this trust factor, adopt it, and embed it into the corporate culture. Therefore, trust must be an integral part of corporate culture. It is impossible for us to move forward with trust if it is not woven into the fabric of the organization’s culture.

The Importance of Trust in the Banking Sector

The banking sector is a structure built upon trust. The ability of customers to carry out financial transactions with confidence forms the foundation of the services banks provide. Trust is not merely a concept; it is the cornerstone of the entire banking sector’s architecture. As customers engage with systems and processes they trust, it is crucial that this trust be maintained invisibly. Rather than simply telling customers, “We are protecting you securely,” banks must ensure that this trust is genuinely felt.

The Invisibility of Trust

Trust in banking services should be maintained invisibly. Customers should be able to perform their transactions with ease, without being burdened by the security measures banks employ. This is made possible through technical processes running in the background. Establishing trust is the responsibility of the entire organization, not just the frontline staff.

The Role of Technical Processes

Technical processes play a vital role in establishing trust. Banks utilize advanced technical infrastructures to provide secure services to their customers. These infrastructures protect customer data and ensure that transactions are executed securely. However, technical processes alone are insufficient; they must be integrated into the corporate culture.

Trust in Corporate Culture

Trust must be an integral part of a bank’s corporate culture. Corporate culture ensures that trust does not remain merely a technical concept but is embraced by all employees. Trust should be recognized as a value that is the responsibility of every employee.

The Internal Propagation of Trust

Trust should not only be a value offered to customers but should also permeate the organization internally. Employees must understand the importance of trust and integrate this value into their daily work processes. This enables banks to provide safer and more effective services to their customers.

Sustaining Trust

Trust is a value that requires continuous maintenance and enhancement. To ensure trust, banks must constantly update their technical infrastructure and train their employees. This improves the quality of services offered to customers and safeguards the bank’s reputation.

Conclusion

In the banking sector, trust is not merely a concept but a fundamental value underpinning all services. To enable customers to conduct banking transactions with confidence, banks must continuously update their technical infrastructure and embed trust into their corporate culture. Trust should be viewed not just as a technical process, but as a value that is the responsibility of every employee. In this way, banks can offer safer and more effective services to their customers.
