CyberWhiz General Manager Çağatay Büyüktopçu noted that the countries marked in blue have announced IoT cybersecurity regulations and that Türkiye is among the nations set to comply with these regulations starting in 2027.
Çağatay Büyüktopçu stated the following:
With the rapid advancement of technology today, there is a significant surge in the use of IoT devices. These devices appear across a wide spectrum, ranging from home chargers and wearable health devices to alarm systems, smart door locks, and home appliances. However, the proliferation of these devices brings new cybersecurity challenges. Many countries around the world have established cybersecurity regulations to ensure the security of IoT devices. Turkey is also among the countries aiming to comply with these regulations as of 2027.
Scope of IoT Devices and Regulatory Requirements
IoT devices encompass various technological products that simplify users’ daily lives. However, the security of these devices must be ensured not only during the manufacturing stage but also throughout their entire lifecycle. Regulations mandate specific updates to the software and hardware of these devices. Furthermore, to ensure they operate securely at every stage, these devices must undergo periodic IoT penetration testing.
The Cyber Resilience Act and Long-Term Security
The Cyber Resilience Act, set to come into effect in Europe after 2027, aims to guarantee not only the secure design and sale of devices but also their security throughout their entire lifecycle. This regulation mandates that products undergo security monitoring and receive updates for a minimum of five years. If a security vulnerability is detected, it must be remediated; if remediation is not possible, the customer must be informed.
Sustainability in Cybersecurity and the Importance of Digital Elements
One of the challenges posed by cybersecurity regulations is ensuring the sustainability of these processes. The Cyber Resilience Act covers not only physical devices but also associated digital elements—namely mobile applications and cloud services. This necessitates ensuring end-to-end security for both the devices and the digital services. Establishing a sustainable cybersecurity framework requires an integrated assessment of all these elements.
Future-Readiness and Compliance
The future of IoT cybersecurity regulations entails significant preparation for both device manufacturers and users. Manufacturers must implement software and hardware updates to bring their products into compliance with the regulations. Users, meanwhile, must ensure that their devices meet security standards and stay up to date with regular updates.
