Can a Person Become the Strongest Line of Defense Through a Proper Culture of Awareness?

Murat Çelebi, Director of Information Security and Risk at the Central Securities Depository (MKK), spoke about how—given the right culture of awareness—humans can transform into the strongest line of defense. Çelebi stated the following:

It is generally believed that the majority of security vulnerabilities stem from human error. However, I do not believe that the human element is necessarily the “weakest link.” In my view, individuals could only be considered the weak link if they lack awareness regarding the criticality of their work, lack the necessary competence and experience for their specific duties and responsibilities, or possess low levels of awareness. Conversely, competent and experienced individuals—who are aware of the organization’s and their own roles and responsibilities, and who are aligned with the organization’s culture and approach to cybersecurity—can, in my opinion, constitute the strongest line of defense. Even though artificial intelligence is currently a trending topic and plays a major role in many processes and products, I believe the human element remains the fundamental factor in establishing a robust defense system. Of course, to strengthen this human factor, steps can be taken to ensure individuals receive training relevant to their duties and responsibilities and to raise their awareness regarding issues such as phishing and social engineering attacks. If this awareness is enhanced, I believe the human element becomes the most significant contributor to the strongest line of defense.

The Role of the Human Factor in Security

Security vulnerabilities are often attributed to human error. However, this should not lead to underestimating the human role in security. With the right training and awareness, humans can become the strongest element of security systems. In this article, we will examine the role of the human factor in security and how it can be strengthened.

The Source of Security Vulnerabilities

A significant portion of security vulnerabilities stems from human error. However, this does not mean that every individual is a weak link. The root causes of vulnerabilities are often a lack of awareness and insufficient training. Therefore, initiatives aimed at training and raising awareness are essential for strengthening the human factor.

The Importance of Competent and Experienced Employees

Competent and experienced employees constitute the strongest line of defense in security systems. These individuals have embraced the organization’s security policies and culture and are fully aware of their duties and responsibilities. Consequently, organizations should support and foster the development of such employees.

Artificial Intelligence and the Human Factor

Although artificial intelligence plays a significant role in security processes, it cannot entirely replace the human factor. Humans form the cornerstone of security systems through their creative thinking and problem-solving abilities. Therefore, artificial intelligence and the human factor can work together to create a more robust security system.

Training and Awareness Initiatives

Training and awareness initiatives are critical for strengthening the human factor. Employees should receive training on topics such as phishing attacks and social engineering and be made aware of these types of threats. Such training enables employees to be more effective in preventing security vulnerabilities. Strengthening the Human Factor

Continuous training and development programs should be implemented to strengthen the role of the human factor in security. Employees should be encouraged to develop themselves within the scope of their duties and responsibilities. In this way, the human factor can become the strongest element of security systems.

Conclusion

Although a significant portion of security vulnerabilities stems from human error, the human factor can become the strongest element of security systems through proper training and awareness. Competent and experienced employees form the cornerstone of security systems. By working in tandem with artificial intelligence, the human factor can help create a more robust and effective security system. Therefore, strengthening the human factor through training and awareness initiatives plays a critical role in preventing security vulnerabilities.
