Manufacturing facilities where IT and OT security are not managed in an integrated manner.

Speaking to Wise TV, Hayat Holding CISO Murathan Gemicioğlu stated that the distinction between IT and OT needs to be properly designed from the outset. Emphasizing that modern technologies—particularly with the advent of Industry 4.0—necessitate decision-making processes supported by machine learning and artificial intelligence, Murathan Gemicioğlu stated the following:

“In the landscape of modern technology, the integration of IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operational Technology) has gained immense importance alongside the transition from Industry 3.0 to 4.0. This integration has become even more critical as machine learning and artificial intelligence play an increasingly significant role in decision-making processes. The collaboration between IT and OT is essential, particularly for enhancing operational efficiency.

In the past, IT and OT were typically kept isolated. This was driven by the belief that OT systems should remain unaffected by IT-related issues. However, maintaining this isolation was not always feasible. The need for continuous data flow and intervention made the collaboration of IT and OT mandatory. In particular, in environments where shared IP addresses are used, various problems can arise without IT-OT integration.

Although there are areas in Türkiye where Industry 3.0 has not yet been fully established, Industry 4.0 is bringing innovations such as artificial intelligence, unmanned warehouses, unmanned production lines, and automated delivery zones to the forefront. These innovations require advanced IT support. A layered and segmented architecture must be established to ensure the proper separation and security of IT and OT systems. Designing this strategy from the ground up requires significant time and investment.

On the OT side, it is crucial to utilize smarter and more scalable systems. Security measures that vary depending on different protocols and manufacturers require strategic planning…” …requires it. Ensuring the transition and security between IT and OT is critical to the success of this integration.

In conclusion, IT and OT integration is indispensable for the success of Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence applications. Properly planning and implementing this integration will enhance the competitiveness of businesses.
