What roadmap should be followed for the security of critical infrastructure?

Why are IoT and OT security so critical? Murathan Gemicioğlu, CISO of Hayat Holding, discussed cybersecurity threats in industrial systems and how to address them with Wise TV.

Many issues regarding IoT security have recently come to the fore. For instance, the misuse of substances added to drinking water to regulate fluoride levels could result in water reaching lethal toxicity. In another instance at a manufacturing plant, an attack involving the activation of steel heated to several thousand degrees at the beginning of the production line—rather than at the end—led to the entire facility burning down. With so much happening globally and such dangerous scenarios existing, even a minor attack can cause damage resulting in serious loss of life. The alarming aspect of this situation is the need to compare global best practices with our own potential actions to prevent such incidents. There is a vast array of products, devices, and resources available; however, the challenge lies in positioning them correctly, explaining their value to senior management, and executing projects properly. It is crucial to formulate a strategy and select products and devices aligned with that strategy to maximize visibility. The fundamental engineering principle—”you can manage what you can see”—applies equally to information security and cybersecurity. Factories in our country can also experience such issues. Just as business processes not fueled by technology have no future, the same applies to the OT sector. It is essential to establish a strategy, distinguish between OT and IT, and calibrate the approach based on threat levels. It is important to have an infrastructure capable of continuous monitoring, visibility, and the detection and halting of real-time anomalies. These issues should be addressed by first establishing the infrastructure and then implementing security software.

The Rise of Security Threats

Today, security threats are more prominent than ever. Cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure, in particular, pose a threat to public safety. Even simple errors—such as the incorrect adjustment of fluoride levels in drinking water—can lead to serious consequences. Such incidents underscore the vital importance of security measures.

Security Vulnerabilities in Manufacturing Facilities

Manufacturing facilities can be vulnerable to cyberattacks. A single incorrect intervention can jeopardize the entire facility. Therefore, security measures must be implemented at every stage of the production process. A strategic approach is essential to ensure the security of these facilities.

A Strategic Approach to Security

Security strategies should not be limited to technological solutions alone; the entire organization, starting with senior management, must be involved. Selecting the right products and devices, enhancing visibility, and maintaining continuous monitoring are fundamental elements of an effective security strategy.

The Importance of Visibility

Visibility is a cornerstone of security. The fundamental engineering principle—”you can manage what you can see”—applies equally to cybersecurity. Continuous monitoring and analysis of systems are required to detect anomalies.

The Situation in Our Country

Similar security issues occur in Türkiye as well. Factories and manufacturing facilities can be vulnerable to cyber threats. Consequently, security measures compliant with international standards must be implemented through the development of local solutions.

Technology and the Future

Technology has become an indispensable part of business processes. Processes not powered by technology have no future. Therefore, the integration and security of OT and IT systems are critical for future success.

Infrastructure and Security Software

To ensure security, a robust infrastructure must first be established. Security software built upon this infrastructure can detect and prevent threats proactively. The effectiveness of these systems must be enhanced through continuous monitoring and updates.

Conclusion

Security threats have become more significant than ever in today’s world. Vulnerabilities exist in many areas, ranging from manufacturing facilities to drinking water supplies. A strategic approach must be adopted to address these vulnerabilities, while visibility and continuous monitoring must be improved. Similar challenges are faced in Türkiye, necessitating the development of local solutions. Technology-driven processes have a bright future, and these threats can be overcome through robust infrastructure and effective security software.
