Is cybersecurity an obstacle or a necessity in digital transformation?

Dgpays CISO Emre Savaştürk answered the question, “Is cybersecurity an obstacle or a necessity in digital transformation?”

Savaştürk stated:

“First, we will talk about the role of cybersecurity in digital transformation and innovation. Actually, when we talk about digital transformation, a wide range of questions and answers can arise. Cybersecurity is, in fact, a natural part of this. But from an outsider’s perspective, or when looking at some negative outcomes, cybersecurity can be perceived as a barrier. Actually, this is entirely related to how that process is managed within the organization; it’s a matter that needs to be addressed more structurally. What I mean is: Cybersecurity is never, and should never be, a barrier in digital transformation and innovation. It is a direct part of the core business. How do we ensure this? First of all, CISOs, or information security managers, should be involved in these projects from the very beginning, in every step. This is very valuable.” The more synchronized communication we have with upper management, the more we can build that bridge with lower-level teams and IT – that’s actually the key point. I’d say CISOs need to have strong communication and persuasion skills. Along with that, we can better implement our own technical controls and risk methodologies, and instead of seeing these as barriers, we can think of them as formal project plans that we can implement step-by-step.

The Cornerstone of Digital Transformation and Innovation: Cybersecurity

Digital transformation has become an inevitable process for gaining a competitive advantage in today’s business world. In this process, innovation enables businesses to operate more efficiently and effectively, while cybersecurity plays a critical role in ensuring the secure implementation of these innovations. Cybersecurity should be seen as a natural part of digital transformation. However, in some cases, cybersecurity can be perceived as a barrier. This perception is usually related to how cybersecurity is managed. In this article, we will discuss the role and importance of cybersecurity in digital transformation and innovation.

The Role of Cybersecurity in Digital Transformation

Digital transformation refers to businesses restructuring their business processes using digital technologies. In this process, cybersecurity ensures that the transformation takes place securely by protecting the data and systems of businesses. Cybersecurity should be present at every stage of digital transformation and should be seen as a support mechanism, not a barrier.

The Relationship Between Innovation and Cybersecurity

Innovation is a critical element for businesses to gain a competitive advantage. However, cybersecurity should not be overlooked when developing innovative solutions. In innovation processes, cybersecurity ensures the secure integration of new technologies and protects the company’s reputation. Therefore, cybersecurity and innovation should be considered complementary elements.

Cybersecurity Management and Communication

Effective cybersecurity management is critical to the success of digital transformation and innovation processes. At this point, CISOs and information security managers should be involved in the process from the very beginning of projects. By establishing harmonious communication with senior management, they should demonstrate that cybersecurity is a bridge, not a barrier. Communication and persuasion skills should be among the most important abilities of cybersecurity managers.

Risk Management and Technical Controls

Cybersecurity should be supported by risk management and technical controls. Businesses should develop risk methodologies to identify potential threats in advance and take necessary precautions. Technical controls should be seen as a building block that ensures the security of the business, rather than a barrier.

Cybersecurity and Project Planning

Cybersecurity should be addressed as a formal project plan in digital transformation and innovation projects. This approach ensures the step-by-step implementation of cybersecurity and the secure transformation of the business. Including cybersecurity in project planning allows businesses to achieve a more secure and sustainable digital transformation.

Conclusion

Cybersecurity is an integral part of digital transformation and innovation processes. Businesses should view cybersecurity not as a barrier, but as a support mechanism. CISOs and information security managers should be involved in the process from the beginning of projects and maintain harmonious communication with senior management. Supported by risk management and technical controls, cybersecurity enables businesses to achieve digital transformation and innovation securely. In this process, cybersecurity plays a critical role in enabling businesses to gain a competitive advantage.
