On Wise TV, Hakan Türköner, Director of Information Security Management and Corporate Solutions at Boyner Group, discussed the impact of corporate culture and strategic investments on cybersecurity.
Once you have secured the support of senior management for the development of an organizational culture, you also gain the backing for necessary investments. Consequently, as a strategic leader, you must identify and define exactly which investments are required. Given the vast array of options, you need to make the right choices—determining which solutions truly align with your organization and effectively address its specific needs. Senior management must be able to trust your judgment regarding the purpose of various security tools and the level of protection they provide. In your role as a CISO, you are responsible for making sound strategic decisions and selecting products that offer the best price-performance ratio for the company’s requirements. Otherwise, you risk accumulating a “graveyard” of unused security tools—a collection of significant investments that serve no actual purpose. Therefore, when making these selections, it is essential to choose products that fit the organizational culture, garner support from senior management, and genuinely meet our needs. At Boyner, because we operate in e-commerce and across an omni-channel environment, our requirements are highly diverse. We cater to distinct audiences both offline and online, leading to a wide range of needs and a substantial attack surface. This expansive attack surface necessitates the use of over 30 different security tools, which in turn requires a sizable security team. Furthermore, as security has evolved—shifting from a function once managed by just one or two individuals (or even shared across various departments) to one requiring large, dedicated teams—it is crucial to help the organization adapt to this change and ensure that this new approach is embraced as part of the corporate culture. Everyone is currently juggling a project, striving to meet a deadline. Right now, we have a marketplace project underway at Boyner. Launching this marketplace requires a concerted, end-to-end effort from all our software teams—spanning UX, mobile development, and quality assurance. Business units are also deeply involved, and we are constantly racing toward a specific deadline. To ensure the project’s success, it is essential that the code is written correctly; this involves using tools to measure and maintain code quality. Furthermore, we have an end-to-end process in place for code security, where every piece of code submitted or deployed is rigorously checked to ensure it is secure.
Top Management Support in the Formation of Corporate Culture
Corporate culture is a key element that defines an organization’s identity and shapes the behavior of its employees. Top management plays a significant role in the formation of this culture. By making strategic decisions, top management establishes the organization’s vision and values. In this process, making the right investments and exercising strategic leadership become crucial. The support of top management is essential for establishing a solid foundation for corporate culture. Such support boosts employee motivation and facilitates the achievement of the organization’s goals.
Determining Strategic Investments
The accurate identification of strategic investments plays a critical role in the formation of corporate culture. Making investments that align with the organization’s needs ensures cost-effectiveness and contributes to its growth. During this process, strategic leaders—backed by top management—identify which investments are most suitable for the organization. This is of vital importance for the organization’s long-term success.
Selection and Management of Security Tools
In the modern business world, security has become more important than ever. Organizations must be diligent when selecting security tools, ensuring that these tools effectively meet their specific requirements. Poor choices can lead to both financial losses and damage to the organization’s reputation. Therefore, the selection and management of security tools should be approached from a strategic perspective.
Solutions Tailored to Diverse Needs
Every organization has its own unique set of needs. Companies like Boyner, which operate through both online and offline channels, cater to a wide and diverse customer base. This, in turn, leads to a greater variety in the organization’s own requirements. Organizations must develop solutions tailored to these diverse needs and secure the support of senior management when implementing them.
Managing a Broad Attack Surface
Having a broad attack surface can present both an opportunity and a threat to an organization. Effectively managing this attack surface enhances organizational security and minimizes risks. In this process, organizations can keep their broad attack surfaces under control by utilizing over 30 different security tools.
Project Management and Code Security
Project management plays a vital role in helping organizations achieve their objectives. In software projects, in particular, code quality and security are of paramount importance. When managing projects, organizations must ensure that the code is written correctly and is secure. This not only guarantees the success of the project but also protects the organization’s reputation.
Adopting Organizational Culture
Adopting an organizational culture boosts employee motivation and facilitates the achievement of the organization’s goals. In this process, the support and leadership of senior management are essential. When employees embrace the organizational culture, they demonstrate a stronger commitment to the organization’s vision and values, which in turn secures the organization’s long-term success.
Elements such as senior management support, the identification of strategic investments, the selection and management of security tools, the development of solutions tailored to diverse needs, the effective management of a broad attack surface, and a focus on project management and code security are all critical to the formation of an organizational culture. Addressing these elements correctly ensures the organization’s long-term success and enhances employee motivation. Embracing the organizational culture fosters a deeper commitment among employees toward the organization’s vision and values.
