Sabiha Gökçen Airport Information Technology and Automation Director İsmihan Baysal Anderson spoke about where artificial intelligence is used. Anderson said:
“We started implementing artificial intelligence applications at Sabiha Gökçen when artificial intelligence wasn’t being talked about as much. The most important issue for us is the comfort of our passengers. At different times of the year, queues can form in different areas of the airport. We constantly measure the length of these queues and how long it takes to process people in the queues. This technology processes images with 3D sensors and converts them into certain metrics using data analytics. If these metrics exceed certain criteria, alarms are sent to operations, and the operations teams try to solve the problems related to these queues. This is one area where we use artificial intelligence. Another area, which we think you may have used, is our e-passports. If you haven’t used them, please do. You scan your passports. A facial scan and a fingerprint scan are performed, and by matching them with the passport, your departure abroad is completed. This is another area where we use artificial intelligence. We have a passenger assistant. It was created with a generative artificial intelligence-supported algorithm.” Its name is SAVVy. SAVVy answers all of our passengers’ questions in a chat environment. You can easily chat with it. It’s very easy to use. You can access it from the website or the application. Now we are working on how to make artificial intelligence available to departments in the background, especially in the “back office,” and identifying which “use cases” we can use.
Artificial Intelligence and the Airport Experience
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing many sectors today. Airports are also benefiting from this technological transformation, adopting AI applications to improve passenger experience and increase operational efficiency. Sabiha Gökçen Airport has taken a pioneering role in this field, developing various AI solutions to enhance passenger comfort. In this article, we will examine the AI applications used at Sabiha Gökçen Airport and their contributions to the passenger experience.
Queue Management and 3D Sensors
One of the most common problems at airports is the long queues that form during peak times. Sabiha Gökçen Airport uses 3D sensor technology to solve this problem. These sensors measure the length of queues and the processing times of people in the queues, converting this data into metrics through data analytics. When the obtained data exceeds certain criteria, alarms are sent to the operations teams, thus enabling more effective queue management.
E-Passport and Biometric Verification
Today, biometric verification systems are becoming widespread to enhance travel security. The e-passport system used at Sabiha Gökçen Airport scans passengers’ faces and fingerprints, matches them with passport information, and speeds up international departure procedures. This system offers passengers a faster and safer travel experience.
Passenger Assistant: SAVVy
Sabiha Gökçen Airport has developed a productive AI-powered passenger assistant to better serve its passengers. This assistant, called SAVVy, answers passengers’ questions and guides them. SAVVy is easily accessible via the website or mobile application and offers a user-friendly experience.
Back Office Applications
Artificial intelligence improves not only the passenger experience but also airport operations. Sabiha Gökçen Airport aims to increase the efficiency of departments by using artificial intelligence in back office processes. In this context, studies are being conducted on different use scenarios, and research is being conducted into which areas artificial intelligence can be used more effectively.
A Look into the Future with Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence will continue to play a significant role in the future operational processes of airports. Sabiha Gökçen Airport has succeeded in improving passenger experience and operational efficiency by adopting this technology. It is predicted that the airport experience will further improve in the future as artificial intelligence is used in more areas.
Conclusion
Sabiha Gökçen Airport has succeeded in increasing passenger comfort and operational efficiency through artificial intelligence applications. Innovative solutions such as 3D sensors, e-passport systems, and passenger assistants make the airport experience faster, safer, and more user-friendly. It is predicted that in the future, airport operations will further improve and passenger satisfaction will increase as artificial intelligence is used in a wider range of areas.
