How can sensitive data be protected?

Çiğdem Yurdakul Kılıç, Deputy General Manager of Information Technologies and Business Development at Türkiye Sigorta, shared her recommendations for protecting sensitive data.

As an insurance company, we process sensitive data—specifically special categories of personal data, including health information. My recommendation to businesses is to ensure that data is protected throughout its entire lifecycle—from the initial recording stage through storage, transfer, and backup—and to implement the necessary encryption mechanisms. In particular, I advise keeping minimal data only in necessary environments and revoking any unnecessary access privileges from users.

The Importance and Protection of Sensitive Data

With the rapid rise of digitalization today, protecting sensitive data has become more important than ever. This is particularly critical for organizations that process special categories of data—such as health information—including insurance companies. Protecting sensitive data is not merely a legal obligation; it is also essential for maintaining customer trust. This article discusses the measures required to protect sensitive data and the key points to consider throughout this process.

The Beginning of the Data Lifecycle

Sensitive data protection must begin at the very first stage—when the data is recorded. The first step in this process is accurately classifying the data and determining which information qualifies as sensitive. At this stage, plans must also be made regarding the platforms where the data will be stored and transmitted.

The Importance of Encryption Mechanisms

Encryption mechanisms play a critical role in data protection. Robust encryption methods should be employed across all platforms where data is stored, transmitted, or backed up. This safeguards data against unauthorized access and prevents data breaches.

Removing Unnecessary Data

Another way to enhance data security is to store only the data that is strictly necessary. Removing unnecessary data from the environment reduces the risk of data breaches. Therefore, it is important to determine which data is truly essential and to regularly delete any unnecessary information.

Authorization Management and Access Control

Authorization management and access control are vital for protecting sensitive data. The access rights of users should be reviewed regularly, and any unnecessary privileges revoked. This ensures that data remains accessible only to authorized individuals. Data Backup and Recovery Plans

To prevent data loss, regular backups must be performed, and an effective data recovery plan must be established. Backup processes ensure that data is stored securely and can be rapidly restored in the event of data loss.

Conclusion

Protecting sensitive data is of vital importance for businesses in today’s digital world. Measures such as protecting data throughout its lifecycle, effectively utilizing encryption mechanisms, removing unnecessary data from systems, and managing access rights play a critical role in ensuring data security. These measures not only facilitate compliance with legal requirements but also enhance customer trust. Taking a proactive and informed approach to this matter will yield significant long-term benefits for both businesses and their customers.
