How does Türkiye compare to the rest of the world regarding the security of critical infrastructure?

Lostar General Manager Murat Lostar compares Turkey’s situation in the field of critical infrastructure security with the world and shares important information.

When I compare Türkiye with the world, it will be a completely personal comparison. I have to say that Türkiye is inevitably in the middle. Regulation on our critical infrastructures actually emerged as one of the top 30 countries in the world. Critical infrastructure operators have also started working on this issue. With the will of the state on this issue, certain studies have been carried out in critical infrastructures in Türkiye. In addition to risking countries that are better than us or countries that are worse, we should also mention this: In every country, there are critical infrastructure operators or companies that are much better or worse than us. Let’s not forget that even in the United States, which we know is better than us in terms of security in many issues, there were serious critical infrastructure problems 4-5 years ago. Just because the Colonial Pipeline, that is, the pipelines that carry oil from Texas to the East coast of America, New York and Baltimore, became inoperable as a result of a cyber attack, a serious energy shortage occurred on the East coast of America, and even power outages occurred.

The Importance of Critical Infrastructure and Türkiye’s Position

Critical infrastructures are systems vital for sustaining a country’s economic and social life. These infrastructures encompass essential services such as energy, water, transportation, and communication. Turkey holds a significant position in this field, ranking among the top 30 countries globally. However, maintaining and enhancing this position requires continuous effort. Türkiye’s regulations regarding critical infrastructure and the state’s commitment to this sector support the country’s ongoing development in this area.

Management and Regulation of Critical Infrastructure

Managing critical infrastructure requires cooperation between the public and private sectors. Regulations implemented in Türkiye aim to ensure the security and sustainability of these infrastructures. These regulations mandate that infrastructure operators adhere to specific standards and engage in continuous improvement.

Türkiye’s Initiatives Regarding Critical Infrastructure

Turkey has taken significant steps toward developing and protecting critical infrastructure. The state’s commitment and the efforts of operators have made these infrastructures safer and more efficient. Nevertheless, much work remains to be done, and a process of continuous improvement is essential.

International Comparisons and Türkiye’s Standing

Turkey ranks in the mid-range globally regarding critical infrastructure. However, maintaining and improving this position requires adherence to international standards and a commitment to continuous improvement. Türkiye’s success in this field provides a significant advantage compared to other countries.

Security Issues in Critical Infrastructure

Critical infrastructure can be vulnerable to various security threats, such as cyberattacks. The Colonial Pipeline incident in the United States demonstrates the severity of such threats. It is essential for Türkiye to remain prepared for these threats and to continuously update its security measures.

Future Challenges and Opportunities

Challenges facing critical infrastructure in the future include cybersecurity threats, natural disasters, and technological advancements. However, these challenges also present new opportunities. Capitalizing on these opportunities and further strengthening its infrastructure will contribute to Turkey’s economic and social development.

Conclusion

Critical infrastructure is vital for a country’s sustainability and security. Turkey holds a significant global position in this sector and is making continuous efforts to maintain it. Regulations, government commitment, and the efforts of operators all support Türkiye’s success in this area. Nevertheless, preparedness for future challenges and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential for Türkiye to sustain its success in this field.
