What risks await factories in OT systems?

Murat Lostar, General Manager of Lostar, explains the general state of risk perception in Turkey and the reasons why cybersecurity investments—particularly in the manufacturing sector—are progressing slowly.

Just as elsewhere in the world, people in Türkiye can be somewhat slow to perceive risks, partly due to factors rooted in Turkish culture. Our perception of risk often arises not from proactive thought or planning, but rather indirectly—when systems (whether our own or those of close associates) become exposed to the internet through integration. While risks have emerged as a result, actual incidents have been relatively few so far. We have heard reports of disruptions at a handful of factories—stories of a virus infecting a system here or a problem occurring there—but unfortunately, the risks associated with this issue are rapidly surfacing and becoming a reality. Factory managers and owners are becoming aware of the situation and, consequently, are beginning to invest in cybersecurity. There is a second reason as well: the manufacturing sector in Türkiye is, unfortunately, under increasing pressure and seeing declining profit margins. This leads to a reduction in investment—not only in new production facilities but also in the investments required to ensure the continuity and security of existing operations. As a result, security is often sidelined with the attitude that “it won’t happen to us” or “nothing bad will occur,” and we try to get by relying on nothing more than a “nazar boncuğu” (evil eye bead) for protection.

The Importance of Risk Perception

Today, with the rapid advancement of technology and the spread of digitalization, risk perception has become more important than ever. Particularly in countries like Turkey, cultural factors are among the key elements influencing risk perception. Identifying risks in advance and taking necessary precautions is vital for both individuals and businesses.

Risk Perception in Turkish Culture

Turkish culture often embraces a fatalistic approach, which can influence how risks are perceived. Attitudes such as “It won’t happen to us” or “Nothing bad will happen” can lead to risks being overlooked. This situation can cause serious problems, especially in the business world and the manufacturing sector.

Technological Integration and Risks

While the integration of technological systems enables businesses to operate more efficiently, it also brings new risks. The widespread use of the internet has increased cybersecurity threats, making it essential for businesses to exercise greater caution in this area. However, many businesses continue to operate without being fully aware of these risks.

Risk Management in the Manufacturing Sector

The manufacturing sector in Türkiye is currently facing a challenging period due to narrowing profit margins and intensifying competition. This situation can lead to reduced investment in risk management. Yet, risk management is critical for ensuring the continuity and safety of production operations.

The Role of Factory Managers

Factory managers and owners must be aware of risks and take the necessary precautions. If risks materialize, businesses can suffer significant losses. Therefore, it is essential for managers to be knowledgeable about risk management and to make the necessary investments. The Importance of Security Investments

Security investments are critical to the long-term success of businesses. Should risks materialize, businesses inevitably face reputational damage and financial losses. Therefore, it is essential not to neglect security investments and to implement necessary precautions.

Conclusion

Risk perception is of vital importance for both individuals and businesses. A low level of risk perception within Turkish culture can lead businesses and individuals to overlook potential dangers. New risks arising from technological integration can cause serious problems in the manufacturing sector and other fields. Consequently, maintaining risk awareness and making the necessary investments are crucial for long-term success.
