Is the security of critical infrastructure adequate?

Lostar General Manager Murat Lostar evaluates the cyber security level of production facilities and critical infrastructures in Turkey.

I don’t think it’s possible to generalize like this. There are production structures and critical infrastructures in Türkiye that are really safe, feel and feel very good, and have taken many security measures. There are already many state and private sector institutions working on this issue, making efforts with the regulations issued by our state on this subject. But similarly, there are structures that do not look at these at all and have serious security vulnerabilities in the factory production environment, industrial internet of objects, or what we call IoT in English, since they do not fall into the definition of critical infrastructure. The reasons for this are not only the lack of security products, but also the fact that while they are installed on time, the people who sell and/or support these products install them in the same way and use the same password almost everywhere.

Security and Critical Infrastructure in Türkiye

In recent years, Turkey has taken significant steps regarding security and critical infrastructure. Numerous production facilities and infrastructure systems across the country have been equipped with security measures. However, there are still issues in this area that need to be addressed. Security vulnerabilities have become increasingly critical, particularly with the advent of new technologies such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This article examines the security measures implemented in Türkiye, the challenges encountered, and proposed solutions.

Security Measures and Regulations

Security measures in Türkiye are supported by state-issued regulations. These regulations are implemented by both government agencies and the private sector. Establishing and enforcing security standards plays a vital role in protecting critical infrastructure.

The Importance of Critical Infrastructure

Critical infrastructure is essential for the sustainability of a country’s economic and social life. This infrastructure encompasses fundamental services such as energy, water, transportation, and communications. In Türkiye, security measures in these sectors are being enhanced, and infrastructure systems are continuously being updated.

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Security

The IIoT has revolutionized the industrial sector. However, the widespread adoption of this technology has also led to an increase in security vulnerabilities. The secure installation and management of IIoT devices are crucial for protecting critical infrastructure. There is a need for increased awareness and training initiatives in this area in Türkiye.

Security Vulnerabilities and Their Causes

The primary causes of security vulnerabilities include a lack of security products and their improper configuration. Furthermore, simple errors—such as the use of identical passwords—increase security risks. To prevent such issues, security products must be properly installed and managed.

Proposed Solutions

Addressing security vulnerabilities requires collaboration between the public and private sectors. Education and awareness-raising initiatives will help foster a widespread culture of security. Additionally, expert support should be sought to ensure the proper configuration and management of security products.

Conclusion

Although significant strides have been made regarding security and critical infrastructure in Türkiye, challenges remain to be addressed. Government regulations and private sector contributions are crucial to resolving security vulnerabilities. The secure integration of new technologies, such as IoT, will enhance the country’s security posture. Education and awareness efforts will play a vital role in this process.
